A?daylong bombardment of emails, social media posts?and phone calls led Air France to cancel a planned shipment Wednesday?of monkeys to a testing lab in the U.S.,?People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claimed in a campaign aimed at getting all airlines to ban the practice.

Air France declined to comment on the specific shipment of 60 monkeys from Mauritius, but PETA provided msnbc.com with a copy of an email purportedly sent by an Air France cargo official in Chicago, Ill., to PETA that states: "Our colleagues overseas have confirmed that this scheduled shipment of monkeys has been cancelled."

The campaign follows PETA allegations of abuses at?the?U.S. branch of a Japanese testing lab. Several airlines were targeted at the time, and PETA followed up with a daylong bombardment earlier this week.

"We don't know whether they will accept future shipments of primates destined for laboratories but are strongly urging them not to and will be monitoring the situation closely like we have been," Justin Goodman, PETA's associate director for lab investigations, told msnbc.com.

"We have written to Air France officials to urge them to adopt a formal policy against transporting primates destined for laboratories as nearly every other major airline in the world already does, including Air France?s partner airlines Delta and Alitalia," he added. "We have not yet received a response."

Goodman noted that?"we are in touch with all of the remaining major airlines that do not yet prohibit shipping primates to laboratories, and are making progress with several of them."

He identified them as: Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, TAM Airlines, Continental Airlines, Philippine Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines.?

"Air Canada also does not yet prohibit this practice but is currently going to great lengths to get the required permission from the Canadian government to create such a companywide ban," he added.

While not commenting on a?specific shipment, Air France spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand?did tell msnbc.com that:

"Air France Cargo refuses to transport laboratory animals destined for any use other than medical" research.

"In addition, Air France Cargo ensures that all biomedical research involving the use of animals in laboratories with which the airline works is fully in line with current legislation and the regulations drawn up by scientific organizations specializing in animal welfare.

"Air France Cargo refuses transportation if the testing protocols do not conform to these regulations and visits all customers to make sure this is the case. Air France Cargo also monitors the supplier, who must comply with the breeding rules in force."

Goodman countered that the U.S. lab in question, Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories, has been repeatedly fined for violating U.S. animal welfare laws.

He also questioned Air France's claim that it only ships animals to labs for "medical" testing. "SNBL is a contract organization, which means that they test whatever anyone pays them to test, including drugs, chemicals, pesticides and cosmetics," Goodman said. "So unless Air France is asking SNBL for documentation for specifically how each and every monkey is being used at the lab, it is impossible for Air France ? and the public ? to know whether their policy is being adhered to or not."

Credit Suisse traders plead guilty (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Several former Credit Suisse traders manipulated the books on mortgage-backed securities when the U.S. real estate market slumped in 2007 and 2008, two of the former traders at the investment bank said in court on Wednesday.

The men, David Higgs, 42, and Salmaan Siddiqui, 36, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in New York to a criminal charge of conspiracy to falsify books and records and commit wire fraud.

Separately, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed civil charges against Higgs, Salmaan Siddiqui and two other traders. The other two were identified in the SEC complaint as Kareem Seregeldin, a one-time boss of Higgs at Credit Suisse, and Faisal Siddiqui.

Lawyers for Seregeldin and Faisal Siddiqui, who is not related to Salmaan Siddiqui, were not immediately available to comment.

Higgs and Salmaan Siddiqui are cooperating in a U.S. government investigation on the writedowns of subprime mortgage derivatives at the height of the financial crisis.

There have been few prosecutions of individuals at high-profile banks for conduct that contributed to the financial crisis, but the Obama administration says it is stepping up investigations over the collapse of the subprime housing market.

In the case of the two former Credit Suisse traders federal prosecutors brought a single conspiracy charge carrying a maximum prison term of up to 5 years, but not a charge of securities fraud, which carries a prison term of up to 20 years.

Higgs told a federal judge that while he was a managing director in the investment banking division of Credit Suisse in London in 2007 and 2008, he and others manipulated and inflated the cash bond position markings of a trading book, called ABN1, in order to hide losses.

"As a result of my actions, senior management of Credit Suisse was given the false impression that the ABN1 book was profitable and caused Credit Suisse to report false year-end numbers for 2007 in their books and records," Higgs said in court.

He said he altered the records because he wanted to remain in good favor with Seregeldin and "enhance" his job performance. He said he stood to receive a year-end bonus.

Seregeldin, who was dismissed by Credit Suisse in 2008, could not be located. A spokeswoman for the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office declined to comment on Seregeldin.

Higgs, who apologized for his conduct, said his boss and others had known about the manipulation and assisted in it. He looked dejected and spoke quietly in describing his conduct to U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan.

The investigation stems from $2.85 billion in writedowns that Credit Suisse took on collateralized debt obligations in 2008. Credit Suisse revealed those CDO losses in early 2008 and blamed them on a group of rogue traders who deliberately mispriced securities and on a failure of internal controls.

Credit Suisse was not charged in the case. A spokesman for the firm declined to comment on Wednesday. The firm has cooperated with the government's investigations.

Salmaan Siddiqui of McLean, Virginia, told a different federal judge a similar story on Wednesday in the same courthouse.

"I exchanged emails and telephone calls with my bosses who directed me to mismark the ABN1 book," Siddiqui said in a proceeding before U.S. District Judge Paul Crotty. "I knew that what I was directed to do, and did, was wrong."

Higgs and Salmaan Siddiqui were released on $500,000 bond each. Higgs will be allowed to return to his home in Britain while the investigation continues. His lawyer, John Brownlee, declined to comment.

In court, Higgs said that traders were required to price securities that they held on a mark-to-market basis of the current market price of the asset or liability or similar assets or liabilities, according to accounting standards and the bank's policy.

Beginning in 2007 when the U.S. real estate market slumped and mortgage delinquencies increased, the value of securities backed by mortgages decreased and the market lost its liquidity.

Higgs told the judge that he and others manipulated the records "rather than mark these securities down to market as we were required to do."

Salmaan Siddiqui's lawyer, Ira Lee "Ike" Sorkin, said after the plea proceeding that his client has been cooperating for some time with prosecutors and the SEC.

Afghan Taliban say will not agree to peace talks ceasefire (Reuters)

KUNAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) ? The Taliban in Afghanistan said on Wednesday they would not agree to a U.S. demand for a ceasefire as a condition for peace talks, but would not comment on a U.S. military report that they were set to retake the country when foreign troops left.

"Our struggle and jihad will continue until we have installed a complete Islamic government in Afghanistan, regardless of the year 2014 or 2015 when the foreign troops say will leave Afghanistan," said Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a spokesman for the hardline Islamist movement.

The Taliban announced last month that they would open a political office in the Qatari capital, Doha, to support possible peace talks with the United States.

But NATO said in a report leaked to media, including the Times newspaper in London, the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, were set to retake control of Afghanistan after NATO-led forces withdraw from the country in 2014.

While the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the report, prepared by the U.S. military, was not meant as a strategic assessment, it could be interpreted as a damning appraisal of the war, now dragging into its eleventh year and aimed at blocking a Taliban return to power.

The report could undermine twin-pronged but separate efforts by both the United States and Afghanistan's government to enter peace talks with the Taliban, as it could re-embolden the fighters ahead of the traditional summer fighting months.

Marc Grossman, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, said during a January visit to Kabul that for talks to get underway and for a transfer of Taliban prisoners from U.S. custody in order to build confidence, the Taliban must first agree to a ceasefire, and renounce support for al Qaeda.

Saudi Arabia is also reluctant to host separate talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban without concessions from the Islamist movement including dropping renouncing its al Qaeda ties.
