Late Thursday, an extraordinary thing happened: Adobe announced in a blog post that it would not provide Flash Player support for devices running Android 4.1, and that it was pulling the plugin from the Google Play store on August 15. The retreat comes five years after the introduction of the iPhone, the device which led to Flash's mobile ambitions, almost even before they began. That Adobe would make such an announcement nearly five years to the day that the first iPhone was sold is kind of funny. I'd like to think that the Flash team has a sense of humor and was well aware of the timing when it posted the blog entry, but I could also see the entry as unintentionally ironic. Either way, it caps off a five-year battle to win the mobile landscape -- one which for Adobe ended in defeat.

One dead, 347 homes destroyed in Colo. fire

A preliminary report indicates 347 residences on about 35 streets have been destroyed by the Waldo Canyon Fire, Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach said Thursday afternoon, adding that the count isn't final.

The fire, the most destructive in Colorado's history, was 15 percent contained Friday morning. The cause hasn't been determined, said Jerri Marr of the U.S. Forest Service.

Late Thursday, authorities said a body was found in the debris of a burned-out home in the area, marking the first fatality from the blaze.

Police Chief Pete Carey said earlier that two people had been reported missing, and that a search was continuing, The Associated Press reported.

Earlier Thursday, Bach toured the heavily damaged Mountain Shadows subdivision.

"There was nothing left in some areas -- burned out foundations that were smoldering. It looked like a nuclear weapon had been dropped. It's as close to hell as I could imagine," Bach said after the morning tour.

Crews are getting a break in the weather, with the area no longer under a "red flag warning," which means extreme fire danger.

On Wednesday, mandatory evacuations were ordered for the 3,000 people in the town of Crystola and part of Woodland Park after more than 32,000 people had to flee on Tuesday.

Those evacuation orders came as the fire moved down a ridge toward those homes, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported, citing communications from an emergency services scanner. "It's huge," said the voice over the scanner. "I would estimate two-three miles in width."

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown on Wednesday called the Waldo Canyon Fire a "monster event" that is "not even remotely close to being contained." The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tuesday night, the community of Mountain Shadows, northwest of Colorado Springs, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow.

President Barack Obama will tour the Colorado Springs area on Friday to show his support, the White House said Wednesday.

The state's second largest blaze is the 136-square-mile High Park Fire, which has destroyed 257 homes and killed one woman. That fire was triggered by lightning on June 9 and is nearly contained.

In Boulder, Colo., the Flagstaff Fire burned to within 1.5 miles of the southern edge of the University of Colorado campus. The 230-acre fire was 30 percent contained and "remains a threat to Boulder," Reuters quoted incident commander Rocky Opliger as saying.

Nationwide, 35 large, active wildfires were being fought. The bulk of them were in nine western states: Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California.

Although the fire season got off to an early start in the West, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year.

In Utah, a 72-square-mile wildfire has destroyed at least 56 structures, mainly homes, between Fountain Green and Fairview. That number is expected to rise. One person has died in that fire. A fire near St. George started Wednesday afternoon and had grown to 2,000 acres by midnight, forcing an undetermined number of residents near New Harmony and Bumblebee to evacuate. The fire was burning three miles north of Zion National Park, prompting park officials to close a canyon area popular with hikers known as the Kolob section.
In southeast Montana, wildfires that have torched more than 200 square miles and burned dozens of homes spread farther Wednesday, with more evacuations ordered after a blaze near Roundup jumped a fire line. The growing Dahl Fire, which has burned more than 60 homes by one estimate, forced an unknown number of residents to leave their homes near its southern flank, on top of an estimated 600 people evacuated the day before. "That's one of the most dangerous fires in the history of Montana," Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.
In Wyoming, a wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from about 2,000 acres to 12,000 acres, or nearly 19 square miles, officials said Wednesday. Authorities worked to get campers out of the area.

Senators push for investing in Burmese fossil fuels | The Cable

Mitchell has served as special coordinator for Burma policy since last year, but democratic reforms and the election of opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi to parliament have prompted the Obama administration to step up its diplomatic engagement with the Burmese government.

Although the State Department has proposed a "sector by sector" plan to renewing private sector relations, the White House has not decided if it will lift sanctions on Burma's notoriously opaque and abusive energy industry.

"There's nothing I can say here definitively on this, because it is an ongoing internal, interagency discussion," Mitchell told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "But ... we are not looking to exclude any sectors from this."

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), addressing "rumors" that the administration plans to "exclude oil firms from new rules allowing U.S. investment in the country," argued that such a policy would be detrimental to U.S. companies as foreign firms continue to sign oil and gas exploration agreements with Burma.

"This or any other ?carve-out strategy' would be a strategic mistake," he said. "I believe that U.S. companies including the oil and gas companies can play a positive role in the effort by demonstrating high standards or responsibility, responsible business conduct, and transparency -- including respect for human rights in Burma."

Suu Kyi, on the other hand, is not as optimistic, and cautioned foreign firms against partnering with the state-owned Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise earlier this month during a speech in Geneva.

In January, Burma's Energy Ministry estimated its natural gas reserves at 22.5 trillion cubic feet, and the international bidding process for 25 offshore oil and gas blocks is scheduled to take place within two to three months.

Saudis to permit women to compete in Olympics

LONDON (AP) ? A month before the London Games, Saudi Arabia appears to be moving closer to sending female athletes to the Olympics for the first time amid mounting pressure on the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom to grant women more rights.

Deliberations by Saudi officials on sending women to the games have been wrapped in secrecy for fear of a backlash from the powerful religious establishment within a deeply traditional society, in which women are severely restricted in public life and are not even allowed to drive.

Saudi Arabia is one of three countries that have never included women in their Olympic teams, along with Qatar and Brunei. The International Olympic Committee said talks have been ongoing with Saudi Arabia to ensure participation and a statement by the country's embassy in London said female athletes, who qualify, could be allowed to participate.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is looking forward to its complete participation in the London 2012 Olympic Games through the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, which will oversee the participation of women athletes who can qualify for the games," the statement said.

Human Rights Watch said the announcement is "an important step forward," but the New York-based group cautioned that gender discrimination in the country remains "institutional and entrenched."

"It is only right that the Saudi government should play by the Olympic rules," Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, said. "But an 11th-hour change of course to avoid a ban does not alter the dismal and unequal conditions for women and girls in Saudi Arabia."

There are no written laws that ban or restrict women from participating in sport in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest shrines. The stigma of female athletes is rooted in conservative traditions and religious views which hold that giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sin.

Saudi officials have been sending mixed signals for months. While some said that they had been working on an arrangement with the IOC, top sports officials in the kingdom were adamant in publicly denying the possibility of female athletes competing at the Olympics.

Saudi Olympic Committee president Prince Nawaf said in April that female participation had not been approved by the country's leaders and that Saudi-based women traveling to London would be contrary to the country's traditions and norms.

Nawaf left open the possibility of Saudi women who are studying abroad being able to compete outside of the team as independent athletes. However, that option was quashed after pressure from human rights groups and the IOC.

On Monday, a Saudi official said an announcement by King Abdullah about Saudi women's participation in the Olympics was expected some days ago, but was postponed after the death of Crown Prince Nayef.

King Abdullah has taken modest steps to reform and modernize the oil-rich nation since he ascended the throne in 2005. He has faced staunch opposition from the hardline members of the royal family on each proposal he's made toward easing restrictions on women.

Saudi women bear the brunt of their nation's deeply conservative values. They are often the target of unwanted attention from the kingdom's religious police, who enforce a rigid interpretation of Islamic Shariah law on the streets and public places like shopping malls and university campuses.

Women do participate in sports in the kingdom, including clandestine soccer and basketball leagues. There are no national competitions, however, that would allow Saudi women to compete in order to qualify for international events.

If the Saudis do send women to the games, then female athletes in judo and in track and field are considered possibilities for the games, sports officials familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press while speaking on condition of anonymity.

Because Saudi women may not meet the international qualifying standards, the IOC may grant them Olympic entry based on "special circumstances," an IOC official told the AP in March, adding that the IOC has insisted on more than one woman on the Saudi team, and hopes for at least two or three.

Saudi officials have repeatedly hinted they'd allow equestrian Dalma Rushdi Malhas, who won a bronze medal in showjumping at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, to compete at the London Games. But the International Equestrian Federation said Monday the 20-year-old athlete will not be competing at the Olympics because she has failed to achieve "the minimum eligibility standard required for the Olympic Games" by June 17.

Malhas' horse was sidelined by injury and missed a month's work during the qualifying period, the federation said in a statement.

IOC President Jacques Rogge has said he is "optimistic" that Saudi Arabia will send women athletes, but last month said any deal was far from complete. Describing talks with Saudi Arabia as "not an easy situation," Rogge said discussions were under way with Saudi Olympic authorities and with athletes themselves.

Qatar and Brunei are expected to include women, according to the IOC. If some arrangement can be made for the Saudis, all national Olympic committees in London would include women athletes for the first time in Olympic history.

About 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in London, representing more than 200 national Olympic committees.

INDIA: Spurt in child abuse prompts helpline to alert parents

PUNE: Childline Pune, the 24-hour helpline for children in distress, issued an alert to parents and guardians on Thursday about growing child sexual abuse in the city and suggested ways to protect the children.

"Dnyana Devi Childline receives child sexual abuse reports and the number keeps growing. In the last five days, we have had to deal with six cases and received reports of four more. Of these, three were repeated rape/molestation by fathers and two by brothers, which prompted us to issue the alert," said Anuradha Sahasrabuddhe, director Dnyana Devi Childline, in a statement.

Sahasrabuddhe has appealed to all parents to carefully monitor their children and keep them secure. "Ensure such communication between yourself and the child that the child feels confident and is motivated to share every little detail of whatever happens in his/her life each day. Empower children by telling them about possible dangerous situations and what to do," she said. It is not difficult to tell children about what can happen, she added.

Parents must accept that the child was not at fault and reassure the child. "Both boys and girls can be abused and child sexual abuse case victims range from newborns to every possible age group," Sahasrabuddhe said.

There were adequate legal provisions and other facilities to help the child. "If these cases are hushed up in the name of family honour, this amounts to injustice to the child and not only harms his/her trust in the parent but also sets the culprit free to abuse other children. The abused child needs firm parental support and counselling," she said.

Sahasrabuddhe said that parents and adults also needed to monitor their own behaviour.

"It is a proven fact that children never lie about such incidents. Any change in normal behaviour pattern of the child should be considered a warning signal. Appropriate age specific sex education that includes gender references help children control their behaviour and empowers them to protect themselves," she said. She has also appealed to the judiciary, advocates and police not to help perpetrators.

Among Latinos, Mitt Romney Trumped By Barack Obama's Immigration Message

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama faced off -- a day apart -- this week in an attempt to woo Latino voters and address their policies on immigration.

Judging by the candidates' receptions from crowds at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials conference, Obama won. He appeared more relaxed, got more applause, and was more insistent on the need for immigration reform.

It wasn't that Romney was entering a lion's den. Although a majority of Latinos are Democrats, most members of NALEO serve in non-partisan positions, no matter their personal opinions. His reception was warm, but not overwhelming, and paled in retrospect to the previous greetings for fellow Republicans Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).

Obama brought the crowd to its feet several times Friday, as he talked about immigration reform, health care and education. He enacted a policy last week that many Latinos had long called for, halting deportations of some young, undocumented immigrants.

He was greeted like a "conquering hero," tweeted Ana Navarro, who served as national Hispanic co-chair for GOP presidential candidate John McCain in 2008.

"Obama giving my Democrat colleagues a lot more to work with, than Romney gave me yesterday at ?#NALEO?," she tweeted. "It ain't going to be easy, folks."

One problem, some attendees said, was that Romney glossed over the issues of undocumented young people, saying only that he favored major reform.

Matt Barreto, a pollster with the non-partisan firm Latino Decisions, said Romney's speech was good but had telling omissions.

"He sort of cherry-picked the immigration ideas that are very popular," Barreto said Thursday. "It doesn't sidestep the larger issue, and the larger issue is, what is your policy [on undocumented immigrants] going to be, and what about this insane idea of self-deport?"

Miami-Dade County school board member Raquel Regalado, a Republican, said she wanted more details from both candidates on a number of immigration issues. She is still undecided on who to vote for, but said she was glad to get "a little bit more information than the usual soundbite."

"I did like the fact that [Romney] came out and said something," said another Republican, Tony Rosado, the mayor of Mascotte, Fla. He added that Democrats have only discussed the Dream Act, while Romney laid out a more expansive plan.

Even Democrats gave Romney credit for taking on the issue of immigration in a more pro-reform way. Attendees from both parties said Romney is making the right call by backing away, at least rhetorically, from the hardline talk he employed on immigration earlier in the campaign.

Janet Murguia, president of the non-partisan National Council of La Raza, said, "it felt like he was starting to pivot to talk with some more specificity" on immigration reform. "The question is whether he will be successful in the pivot here."

That remains the big "if" here. His campaign has furiously released statements -- six in barely more than 24 hours -- from Latino supporters, such as Reps. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) and Quico Canseco (R-Texas), all discussing the economy.

Romney likely would have rather talked about the economy, too. It has been the focus of his campaign messages to Hispanic voters, who usually rank it at the top of their priorities and have suffered higher-than-average unemployment.

Bush skipped over immigration entirely in his speech Thursday, opting to discuss education instead, and when Rubio spoke Friday, he said he felt pushed to talk about immigration because of the president's recent directive halting deportations of some undocumented young people.

"I've abandoned my hopes of only talking about the economy and jobs, as important as that may be, for one moment and one day in the hopes of speaking to you about the issue of immigration," Rubio said.

Chicago alderman Rey Colon, a Democrat, said Romney's speech took a better tone than his previous remarks on immigration, but he was concerned by some of the "trigger words," such as a reference to high-tech border fencing, that might point to increasing enforcement rather than broader reform.

Still, he said he was glad he was able to hear from Romney. "I always think, maybe I drank the Kool-Aid and I need to hear a different perspective on things," Colon said.

Democrat Steve Castaneda, the deputy mayor of Chula Vista, Calif., said that some of Romney's ideas on immigration are good ones and likely will appeal to Latino voters. "The problem is getting Latino voters, or at least the majority of Latino voters, to believe him," he said.

Nearly 100,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive water is stored at the plant. That means Tepco should review the plant?s safety measures against not only aftershocks and tsunamis but also tornadoes and huge typhoons!
